I know what a good one looks like; I've got some decent ones in the lake, but I tell ya what.
I don't like em..I can see a great one and tell ya it is a great one...but it don't do a thing for me.
A great Bekko is nicer looking than a great Skanke...A Skanke's just a Kohaku with Steroid Shimis... Too much is happening
I think they showed up one day and they were different enough so someone named them after the King so they caught on....
Bekkos are Better.

I would have to disagree :D .

Bekkos are usually almost all white or at least 80 to 90%. What you gona do with a white fish?

Sanke are my favorite koi, but they are frustrating as finding a really good one is tough, and if you do find one they are $$$$. Saying that, I do love bekkos and they're even harder to find.

I found this pretty baby from Richard at SJKoi, like it Luke?

the void improves the subtle steps..
dark garden steps in a fresh snow..
the eye has more than enough to smile
(and that's as close to a Haiku as I'm gonna get..i did not ry..it came out that way)

No Barb i don't..the white has gotta be Stone cold WHITE and I like the bekkos where the sumi patches go down the body in a swirling line

Well I like it, I think the head will whiten up with age. It's only 8".

Swirling line huh? That would look interesting. Have you seen one? I'd love to see a pic.

I give you the western eye. Can the re-emergence of the arkansas bekko, possibly in longfin armor form, be far behind? So much for 'Internet learning'! :) JR

I personally do like Bekko, it's a cleaner look to my eye. Sanke are more complex, the placement of sumi is more critical in my opinion (more so than a Showa or Bekko). Sanke sumi is not at all like shimmi (random speckles and freckles).
So Luke once again, we don't see things alike (big surprise).

I dunno Luke you post is sounding a little bit like Sanke Envy or sour grapes to me ;) . Ok so you don't like Sanke, what's with calling them unflattering names (Showake, Skanke, Sankowa)? You protest too much!

I don't like Sanke or Bekko's either. The only Sanke that look good to me are the ones with larger sumi spots, bordering on Showa.

admittedly, sanke is an aquired taste. But it is considered the 'ultimate koi' by most of the Japanese breeders and collectors. It is difficult to produce and truly great one's are rare. But when you see a world class sanke, you realize instantly they are on a whole nother level. The US eye is used to seeing sanke culls and male sanke, and nothing is more insipid than a poor quality male sanke. But if you keep an open mind and study the variety, you will come to appreciate it for what it is- a rare fish of incredible quality potential. Probably the most artistic of the living art varieties.

I thought Luke was talking about kohanke, red and white fish with "Nope, can't ignore that!" size shimies.

Barb, that bekko's pink head looks good to me, but there's not much femme there.

I look forward to seeing how close Mat got to making sankes this year and to hearing what JR has to say about them.

Skanke/Spankme/Shimigoi aren't the same as a nice Sanke. I'm looking forward to the day when I can get my hands on a nice one (like JR described). A beautiful Kohaku pattern with a drop dead Bekko pattern to match would look GREAT in my pond... Maybe one of our babies from this year will suffice for the time being...

I would say from a breeder's dtand point, sanke was one I was never able to produce to my liking. I could never get a good tailstop beni...never. When it comes to sanke, I dearly love matsunosuke that has gin. here is one I found while going thru boxes of gosanke from toshio this spring.

I feel the same way Sandy. That's probably why this sanke from SJkoi caught my eye so much. She only has a few dark thick sumi spots now, and one more that should come up on her left side. She reminded me more of a showa than a sanke. She's still little....about 10".

Ha! My tastes have definitely changed. I used to prefer Showa, but now enjoy seeing more of the background shiroji that most Sankes have.

I always appreciate sanke. From the very beginning. I guess that makes me strange. OK with it.
