While in Japan, you can purchase a breeder's book which lists nearly all the breeders you might ever want to visit during your stay in Japan. I have two of these books. But they are not very user friendly. So, years ago, I create an excel file with a list of breeders and some details about each of them. Some of the information I got first hand after 4 trips to Japan but I also pulled lots of information out of magazines. As you have probably heard, you may hear the breeder referred to by his name or by the farm name so I tried to list both along with relatives that might be involved in the business. The list is too long to only do one breeder per day so I may post up to 4 or 5 names and other days I may post just one with lots of detal on that breeder. I would like for my spreadsheet to be more complete and accurate so any additional information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I have the breeders listed(last name, first name....farm name(if known)....location....what they breed(can change frequently) and comments.

Aizawa, Hisamitsu..... Itoigawa NC.....Itoigawa City.....Breeder of all varieites as well as a consignment breeder

Aoki, Haruo.....Aoki Yorijo.....Iwada, Koshijimachi, Sano-gun, Niigata.....Metallic(Kikokuryu, Ki Kikokuryu & Beni Kikokuryo), Doitsu, Showa, Shiro Utsuri, Matsukawabake & Kikusui....see also Kiyoshi Kase(they work together)

Chusuke, Watanabe... Niigata....Small breeder....Check out theor Kohaku. Great white!!! Goshiki- Minuma bloodline.

Donomae....Shiodani....Gosanke(known for large Nisai Sanke), S. Utsuri, Kujaku, D. Kujaku, Goshiki.

Fukashima, Katsumi, Makie(son)....NNBC.... Niigata....Dealer: Hariwake, Ki Utsuri & GR, Kigoi, Kikokuryo. Katsumi was my guide on my very first Japan trip. Kats works for NNBC.

Kawakami, Chuzo(great grand father), Torakichi(grandfather), Hiroshi(father), Takeshi & Tsuyoshi(son), Takako(wife)...Urakawa Yorijo(Torazo)...mud ponds in Yamakoshi...Uragara Ojiya...Niigata...Gosanke. Began in 1917. Torazo line really refers to sanke production/lineage, characterized by shape & sumi markings which are bluish in color and "match" the beni. The white is very hard white appearance and very distinct. 17 parent sets; Sanke(5), Kohaku(10), Showa(purchases from Ueno- Dainichi female), Kikusui, GR and Goshiki(larger koi are excellent value). Kohaku- Manzo, Sensuke, Dainichi & Murata. Sanke- Torazo, Matsunosuke & Sadazo- breeding far fewer Sanke than before. Showa- Maruju. 40 mud ponds. Peter Waddington bought his first Niigata koi here in 1977. In 1991 Torazo lost his very best true lineage sanke female and needed to use stock from Kobayashi- more known for his showa. This gave Torazo the characteristics of his once famous line but the results were limited as the koi was not particularly large and the trend at that time was definitely towards large impressive sanke. Eventually (around 1992-95)the old torazo line was abandoned and Sadazo and matsunosuke lineage was introduced. It was also around this time that the realization that sanke(translation ="heartbreak" producing only sanke doesn't pay!) that kohaku was also introduced in a more serious way. The stock was Dainichi which was the inspiration for young kawakami san at that time.He now produces a nice grade of kohaku. GC at AJS in '98(kohaku).

Kaneko, Komei(dad- 70), Yasuaki(son- born 1961) & Yuuichi Kimura(mgr.), Tomoko(mom)...Kaneko Yorijo...Nigorisa- wacho, Nagaoka...Niigata...Kujaku, Shiro Utsuri(matures after age 3), D. Sanke, Kawaimono, O. Shigure, Goshiki, Kumonryu, Gosanke, Kikokuryo, Kumonryu, Shusui, Hikarimono. Parent koi- 25 female, 20 male. 54 mud ponds(35,000 tons of water) - Began breeding in 1961. Yasuaki born in 1997. Goldfish.

Kobayashi, Tadashi...Kanezo Yorijo

Kobayashi, Tadashi...Genjiro Yorijo...Chiba Pref. ...Kohaku(Sensuke), Sanke(strong Sadazo blood), Showa(Dianichi), Shiro Utsuri & GR. ...Partnership with Oomo, Nogami, Tanaka. House destroyed in '04 earthquake.

Did you see where my all time favorite Shiro Utsuri Breeder is making a come back? Just saw Seki San from Nigata is taking 100 Shiro Utsuri tosai to the Hawaii Koi Show where he is selling them. He is also the Judge. He lost everything during the big Earthquake and did not start back up. He was assumed permanently retired as he had no sons to carry on his business. Well now he is back. Not sure how long has been breeding again since he is bringing only Tosai or where he got more breeders. He was one of my favorites and one of Peter Waddington's as well. Used to have to wait for Peter San to leave before I could visit. Bred only Shiro Utsuri with an occasional Showa popping up.
