Interesting story, Dale !
For me, it was that 'mystery pond' that I posted above that got me into koi. JR

naaaa, I've had about enough of the 'cult stuff' at this point to last me a life time. :) 'Amazing pond pictures' and a plug for the ZNA members around the world is good enough for me! 'It's all about the pictures!' LOLs. JR

JR, that magoi IS huge; not sure it deserves the bear hug it's getting. LOL

Dale - Interesting story about your family.

Any of these ponds would be a joy to live with - to say the least.
Looking forward to having the pics to enjoy for a long while.

MCA, he passed away in 2003 . His pen name was Junkie and he published a book of poems under that name. One I like a lot went like this-

Snow at the edges
Of a new spring,
young green trees,
Koi---- bright, fresh and quick

Kuroki also loved fishing. But with his busy medical practice it was soon painfully obvious that he was not going
to be able to spend as much time as he would like wandering the banks of rivers and flooded fields in search of fish. So a pond in his home where he could mediate and study his colored carp was a perfect compromise. But even he did not realize in 1955 how koi would become a deeper all encompassing pass time when he was not helping others at the hospital.
THE pond was actually an evolved pond. As with all of us, pond #1 was too small and shallow. But it served as a spring board into koi showing and soon that passion required a renovation of pond #1!! JR

You can see the black magoi among the nishikigoi in this shot of his old pond.

Another shot of the old pond.

So in 1988-89 the construction of the new pond began.

The drain is an interesting design. It is part 'old school' and part 'modern'.

There are actually two drains in that sump pit. The bottom drain does to waste and is flushed daily. The side drain is to the filters and is of course, continuous flow.

No , no shabby koi! Kuroki had some of the best fish of the era. But I think he was also artful on the way he put his school together. As a master of varieties he chose his koi based on what he liked, show prospects and the harmony of the pond.
