For me, it was that 'mystery pond' that I posted above that got me into koi. JR

but in all seriousness.....
i would like to develop more of the appreciation of koi...
not just what makes a good kohaku......how to pick a good asagi.....etc, etc....
and not just the history.....either....
but how to appreciate it....or develop an apprecation...
like your pics....etc, etc....

Dale - Interesting story about your family.
Any of these ponds would be a joy to live with - to say the least.
Looking forward to having the pics to enjoy for a long while.

The mystery pond, the greatest pond ever build IMHO, was owned by this man-------

to be able to spend as much time as he would like wandering the banks of rivers and flooded fields in search of fish. So a pond in his home where he could mediate and study his colored carp was a perfect compromise. But even he did not realize in 1955 how koi would become a deeper all encompassing pass time when he was not helping others at the hospital.
THE pond was actually an evolved pond. As with all of us, pond #1 was too small and shallow. But it served as a spring board into koi showing and soon that passion required a renovation of pond #1!! JR
You can see the black magoi among the nishikigoi in this shot of his old pond.
Another shot of the old pond.

There are actually two drains in that sump pit. The bottom drain does to waste and is flushed daily. The side drain is to the filters and is of course, continuous flow.
